There is a national day for just about everything you can imagine, but National Do Something Nice Day is special. This is a day for putting yourself on the back burner for a minute and thinking about putting others first. Observance of this day doesn’t require a lot of effort. There are many people who have adopted doing something nice for others as a way of life. Let’s look at a few ways you can make this day special.

Volunteer Your Time

Did you know people who volunteer may enjoy improved health? Volunteering has been shown to positively impact an individual’s sense of well-being. People feel more connected when they give their time to a good cause. National Do Something Nice Day could jump-start your volunteering habit. Research shows people who have a genuine altruistic motivation for volunteering may live longer. Their good deeds result in a deeper satisfaction with life and a better outlook.

Spread a Little Sunshine

True, we live in the Sunshine State so spreading sunshine may be redundant, but imagine the look on the face of someone receiving an unexpected bouquet of flowers or box of candy – or tickets to a game. Who doesn’t like a pleasant surprise every now and then? A thoughtful gift can brighten someone’s day immensely. You never know when your act of kindness is going to make all the difference in the world.

Make That Call

Have you been promising to call someone for a while and have never found/made the time? National Do Something Nice Day is the perfect day to pick up the phone and make the call. Whether it’s an aunt that monopolizes the conversation or a friend you haven’t spoken to in months, block off fifteen or thirty minutes, set a timer, if you have to, and call that person. You may be glad you did.

Cross a Chore off Your List

Spouses are good at creating lists of things that need to be done around the house or yard. Oftentimes those things get put off as long as possible, and some things never get done. On Oct 5 of this year, choose one thing off that list and do it. You and your spouse will feel so much better. Who knows? You may be inspired to get a few more things done.

Do Something Nice for a Stranger

This is much easier than it sounds. Maybe you have heard of paying it forward in the drive-through line. National Do Something Nice Day is the perfect time for this act of kindness. If you happen to be in the drive-through line, pay for the order of the person behind you. In some instances that one small act precipitates a chain reaction of people paying for the next person in line.

Share Laughter on National Do Something Nice Day

There is no question about our need for laughter. A hearty laugh lowers blood pressure, releases endorphins and boosts the immune system. Laughter is a great stress reliever. On this day, you can choose to boost your colleagues’ health by sharing a joke, a funny story or video with them. Bringing treats to the office to share is a nice thing to do, but making people laugh is even better.
