Does Florida Have a Leash Law?
Even though Florida has no state-mandated leash laws, most of the 67 counties in the state have a leash law of some type. County and city governments are in charge of whether or not they want to regulate dog control through the use of leashes.
Restraints help prevent problems. Injuries to people and other animals are greatly reduced when dogs are kept on a leash in public places. Maintaining control of your dog is important, no matter if there is a leash law or not. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences.
Liability Bites
While there may not be a state-mandated leash law, Florida laws are clear on damage done by dogs. Dog owners accept responsibility and liability for any injuries their dog may cause. This damage is not limited to injuries to people. It includes other domestic animals and livestock as well.
If your dog bites a person, you are liable for the damages caused. This is regardless of whether the injury happens in a public place, such as a park, or in your own living room if the person bitten is there legally. Both Charlotte and Sarasota Counties have leash laws that must be followed.
In Sarasota County, a dog can be off a leash only while in a dog park that is fenced in. There are dog parks, such as Arlington Park and 17th Street Paw Park, where your canine buddy can run free to his heart’s content. Charlotte County also has parks for Fido.
When you’re in a public place, keep your dog leashed, and, if you know your pet has a tendency to be aggressive or very protective, be sure to take the necessary precautions to ensure no one gets hurt. Keep your pet and others safe by following the leash laws.
